The 1st unit: Urban theory

The urban theory unit is a research unit that pursues the most advanced ideas of urbanism both practically and theoretically. This unit carries out a wide range of research activities that embrace the fields of urban economics, urban policy, urban history, and architectural history. The cities in the 21st century struggle to maintain cultural diversity while they aim to be more sustainable in ecologically, socially and economically. The cultural diversity gives a boost to higher entrepreneurism to find innovative solutions to social, economic and other problems. Outside of the university campus, the unit has the field plazas at Izumi, Ogimachi, and Toyosaki and the field plazas are active in way related to each site's character. The International Creative Cities Forum 2008 was held in Kanazawa.
The policy makers from Bologna, Santa Fe and Berlin were invited to discuss the citizen networks to preserve cultural diversity and sustainable development. The forum brought together not only academicians but also local government officials to set up an arena for knowledge creation on practical solutions to the urban challenges.
